This was just beautiful, poignant and eye opening. You just can't really "get it" during a phone call. Soon you'll be on to another chapter of life and like all the others it will be full of surprises.

Wow, didn't realize you were in India until I checked your profile, and then, clearly, your blog.

Interesting stuff, I'll try to keep reading.

Hope all has been well with you, and hope you enjoy your stay! I've been considering visiting India, so this is all very interesting to me.

Hi,
I've been going to this website everyday and until today the last post was the "I've got my visa" post. Just thought you'd want to know. Thanks for the update and the email. Your gift for writing comes through loud and clear, I read it aloud to Ed. We both appreciate your humor. You also have me feeling I'm there...which wasn't a good thing when you were in the train's powder room.
Love,
Me

Ohhhh wait till you see the bus station bathrooms! Not only do they have stenches so thick you can almost taste them; not only do they lack water pressure (they wash their hands in a basin--don't); but you have to PAY to use them. (I've been asked to pay 5-10 rupees, but refuse to pay more than the Indian rate, which is 1-2.)

As for the train toilets: http://www.reuters.com/article/oddlyEnoughNews/idUSN2857281320080228?feedType=RSS&feedName=oddlyEnoughNews

Good to see your first week has exposed you to so much, the "ups and downs of altitude and character" as I think you called it. You mentioned the street markets? Let me know if you find India just as commercial as America, only not on a retail level--it's on a personal level, but still, commerce rules the day, and when it does, that rift in character from the do-gooders to the not-so-good-doers stretches more and more.

As for food, I'm sure you got the rundown. I never once had a problem with hot food--it's the cold stuff, the unwashed stuff, and water that stuck me in the bathroom.

See Connaught Place yet? Take the Metro? Amazed at how Indian queues work? What and where've you been eating? "Barista," ps, in Connaught Pl. makes for a good replacement for the Bucks :-). What's on the agenda for this weekend?

I am glad u didn't mention the 2 bibles of the west: the totally inane Passage to India and Katherine Mayo's Mother India both of describe what happened to the richest country in the world after the Brits had colonized it for approx 90 yrs.

Do check our late Victorian Holocausts and Dowry Murders by Dr Oldenberg. good books.
"Who shaped the glass through which most of us unconsciously consider India, China, and Africa? 19th century Brits. Their strategy was simple: paint the citizens of these places as ignorant, progress-resisting savages, then rob them blind and, when they starve by the millions, as they also did in conquered Ireland, tell the world it can't be helped."

I love your list. I am going to India with my husband and two children for the fall semester and have also heard variations on all of the above.

My own thought it - there will be fewer stupid ignorant Americans to run into over there!
